    The Magic Box says (roughly):

RUMOR: Sega is planning to make VFX their first multiplatform game. It will be coming to dreamcast as well as other platforms next year.

I'll let others discuss the implications.

This rumor is so off-base it is laughable. First off if the almighty SEGA is going to make multiplatform games dont you think it would be a game franchise that is succesful all over the world. As opposed to one that is only popular in Asia and has a small cult following in North America.

Actually, as unlikely as it might seem this rumour
    has some basis for belief.

First: This is not the first time that something
like this has been mentioned. In fact it was hinted
that Sega might be looking to drop the hardware part
of their business and concentrate solely on software.
That didn't happen but it did come up, it was
obviously something they had thought of before.

Second: you are running off of the premise that VF-X
is going to be the only multi-platform software released
by SEGA or at least the first. This may not be true.
They may be considering a complete software offering and
what slipped out of the nets was information pertaining
    to VF-X.

Who knows? I certainly do not. It wasn't so long ago
that some people in Toronto were saying that there
wouldn't be another installment in the Virtua series
because of something a Sega Rep said. Now, this appears
to be false. Anything is possible so far as business
is concerned. Everyone keeps saying that SEGA is in
financial trouble. Wouldn't a game marketed on the most
suscessful console machines currently available expand
their market penetration and lead to more sales?

    Potentially, at least.

I stand corrected. Two debate points awarded to GE.

    Yay! Debate points!

seriously though, it wouldn't be out of the question
for something like this to happen. I think I would
    welcome it.

Why would you welcome it. To me this would spell the end of SEGA as we know it. I mean they would have to bitch out to whomever owned the platform that they were developing for which would mean not nearly as much innovation as we are used to from SEGA.Which I think is a bad thing and I personally would rather see SEGA go out on their shield.

well keep in mind that I'm talking console systems
not arcade. On Console systems you definately
need huge penetration. SEGA didn't have that
in their hugely humiliating battle with Sony but
it might have had they simply generated software
instead of trying to tie the consumer to their
hardware; which people didn't care to buy.

ahem. Not being able to preduct the future
that might be in store should SEGA care to
make this change I would have to say that
change might be good. Who is to say that the
SEGA as we know it is the perfect expression.
Maybe their problem has always been great
vision bogged down by the distraction of
    uneccesary ballast. Hardware.

    Innovation would not necessarily be
compromised. How could it? Arcade VF2
was made and made exceptionally well
with no thought to the home port. As
well it can be argued that the Saturn
was made with no thought to Model 2, the
board that all major SEGA games were
derived from. And yet the spirit of
innovation remained the same. Games of
great worth were still being turned out.

I would argue that regardless of the platform
that SEGA decides to publish games for their
games will contain the same excellence we expect.
not less. The artists wil not have changed,
    simply the canvas.

    I rescind the towel.

Alright so being a third party devolper would not hurt SEGA as a arcade game producer. However I think it would severly limit their home only games I mean it is arguable that the lion's share of SEGA marquee games are non arcade games even Crazi Taxi 2 is said to be home only and then their are franchises such as Streets Of Rage, All the Sonic Team games and the Phantasy Star games. I am also pretty sure their wouldnt be this internet play through home consoles thing if it was not for SEGA pushing the idea so heavily and the home game industry as a hole would be completly different from what it is now. As I see it if it were not for SEGA i'm pretty sure Nintendo would have a monopoly.

god no. considering that all other arcade systems are utter shit compared to sega's...i don't see how that is.

unarguably, for well over a decade, and with no end in sight, sega has made the absolute finest arcade hardware, and arguably, the finest arcade software.

knee jerk: i say, to hell with the home system hardware, at least in japan. stick with the arcade dept in japan. that's where sega made it's name, fame and money.

    no no...you can't rescind a thrown towel. A towel
    laid is a towel played.

    ...ehnnnn, oh well.

However I think it would severly limit their home only games I mean it is arguable that the lion's share of SEGA marquee games are non arcade games even Crazi Taxi 2 is said to be home only and then their are franchises such as Streets Of Rage, All the Sonic Team games and the Phantasy Star games.

I have to admit bias here. I don't much care for
most console type games. So I can't at all make
adequate comment. I did like sonic though. What
I need to know is how it would limit their
home games. Why would not being in control of
the hardware affect their software/design at all?

I am also pretty sure their wouldnt be this internet play through home consoles thing if it was not for SEGA pushing the idea so heavily and the home game industry as a hole would be completly different from what it is now. As I see it if it were not for SEGA i'm pretty sure Nintendo would have a monopoly.

ahHA! Something I can argue. My point is that an
evolution from SEGA might not be a bad thing, that
a future where SEGA makes software instead of
hardware for the home market would not necessarily
spell and reduction in vision or quality.

Now you seem to be arguing that the
gaming world would have been different if
SEGA's involvement in the past had been
different that we know it to be. Sort of
    a parallel dimension type ponderance.

    buuhhhhttt?

In the console business it is usual practice that the
console developer must approve any game that will be
published on their system. So, if Sega were to dispose
of the console business then they would have to get their
games approved before they could be published (except on
the PC, of course). That means if Sega's competitors were
in a particularly foul mood they could prevent Sega's games
from being published on their console. It's an unlikely
situation, since Sega is a top-notch game developer, but it
    is possible.

ahhhh. Okay, that clairifies that particular
    point.

I think unlikely is right. Especially since
home gaming is expansive right now. The PC
market, Xbox, nintendo, Playstation. It seems
to keep getting bigger. The larger the market
is the less likely it seems that a game of
SEGA's would not be published for at least one
hardware developer. In which case their
    position would not have changed.
