what does the yellow star next to player's name mean?
is there any type of marker that lets you know if you've faced this opponent already?

 

A yellow star indicates you have faced and defeated them at least once.

 

I think the yellow star is removed if you lose to them once, even after you have already beaten them once. So star would mean you have beaten the particular opponent last time. Im not 100% on this right now though.

Shag is right. Also, I'm pretty sure you can't lose the star once you've got it.

Looking in the opponent list from the menu:

???? - Not faced the opponent or quit halfway through
Name on it's own - Faced opponent before but lost
Name with yellow star - Beaten the opponent at least once

 

You don't lose the star if they beat you after you beat them once... That's just to help you figure out who you still need to beat quickly, without having to go to the rival list each time.

You're trying to clear each arcade and eventually every opponent so the stars are just there to show who has been beaten and who hasn't.

They definitely don't go away if you lose to them later. At least in the XBOX version.

 

Correct. It will remain both in the player list for entire arcades and the players available to play immediately list.

 

I confirm this as well, it was my mistake. The star stays.
