US/Canada VF4 monthly tourneys?

I was thinking about this a long time ago (back in the VF2 days), and it just came back to me earlier today: instead of having a big tournament event, say, 3 months or 6 months after VF4 is released in the US, wouldn't it be more fun to organize monthly tournaments/get-togethers? Even if only 4-8 players show up for the first tourney, hopefully as the months pass, the idea will gain more traction and it'll become bigger and better as time passes by.

IMHO, this is preferable to a bigass event many months down the road, because with a monthly tourney schedule, (1) people don't feel as nervous about losing, there's always next month! (2) you can trace the development of players as people learn more and more about the game as time passes (3) you can crown more people as winners (gives people incentive to keep practising) (4) you can film more videos and put up movie clips for all to enjoy.

Would be nice to put all the tourneys under one banner too (e.g. USVF Sunnyvale II, USVF Boston III, etc.) so there's a sense of continuity amongst the various competitions. Maybe together, we could all work this into a big event -- we may not have VF.net, but we sure have great Internet resources that we can leverage to boost the VF community in the West!

Heck, we could even kick off a VF tourney 1-2 weeks after the game is released here; it doesn't matter that people are still learning the game, it'd be a fun event that gets the competitive juices flowing.

Anyway, these are just ideas I'm kicking around.... /versus/images/icons/smile.gif

Oh, I assumed there were going to be monthly tournaments around many arcades, depending on which scene.

Seattle was consistent with biweekly tournaments for the more popular games, Oregon has them monthly as long as somebody volunteers to host--sometimes biweekly even as well. California has generally seemed consistent for tournaments, but that might be a misconception on my end. Of course this reflects Capcom games and Tekken. But if we push hard enough, and there's enough people to play, VF4 should work out.

We'll figure out what the VF4 scene will shape up to be in Oregon. I don't want to have to go to SVGL or Seattle everytime I want to train (though I'm sure it'll be good training indeed--I was happy with my 11 hours with the test version and how far I came along with that).

Anyways, shall either VFDC or your site support a forum or listing of tournament results?

Problem with this is 1)conflicting schedules 2) cost of travel and lodging 3) the border takes forever to cross now in either direction, we're talking many hours. A bigass event will likely have a bigger turrnout because you can plan well into the future and will likely have more people able to come. Although it would be nice to meet and play monthly I just think it is not realistically feasible for Cdns<=>US. It would just be better if you all moved to toronto, then we could play everyday! :p

I think it would be a good idea, but traveling would be a pain. New York, Chicago, and the West Coast are pretty much good to go, because there's bound a lot of competition in those spots. But other places (like Jacksonville, Fl) probably won't be VF4 hot spots. Which means if I wanna participate, I have to travel. I'm not complaining, because I love to travel, and I love playing VF. I'm just pointing out a fact.

Outside of that small con, I think it's great idea. I met new faces, picked up new techniques, and saw new places that I may not have seen under different circumstances.

Ghostdog, for your sake, I really hope Atlanta or somewhere around there gets a good scene. Though I did hear of a "good" arcade in Northern Florida that did have VF3 for a good while.

At least three cities that I know of (Jacksonville's Adventure Landing, Tallahassee's Tilt, and there was a tourney in Gainesville). But that happened early when VF3 came out (Tallahassee got theirs later on).
There is rumored to be a tourney in Orlando around mid-November.
Anyway, I hope this area becomes a VF hot spot.

Chanchai,

As long as we can get the logistical support from the video arcade owners, I'd be more than happy to be able to participate in fortnightly or monthly tournaments =)

Re: tournament schedules, listings, results... um, downloading and categorizing all the VF4 clips out there, and later on maintaining the VF4 location list, is probably enough for me ATM. =P I have B-school applications to take care of, etc.

It might be worthwhile keeping track of events and stuff in a forum instead of on a website (at least initially), so it's easier to update and keep everyone informed, and then different people can post their commentaries etc.

Anonymous,

Well, maybe have a big event every 3 or 6 months, but have regional tournaments (perhaps in VF hotspots) every month? So even if some people can't make it to a big event due to conflicts, they can at least meet up on some other occasion...

________________________

Ultimately, I think what I'm trying to get at is that, at least in some locations (Bay Area, LA, NYC, Chicago, Boston), it might be fun to have monthly events so that people have something to look forward to and work towards. As opposed to just playing 1v1 pickup games every night (or every weekend).

At Sunnyvale Golfland, I can think of a couple of regulars that I would be really excited to play against in a friendly tournament -- Jason Cha, jackybrothas (and his brother), Jemin, Akira, Don, John, Yamcha, Chan, Sam, maybe a few more. That could bring us up to 16, enough for a simple double elimination tourney for starters. And we could start this pretty early on... say the last Saturday of October or something like that... =)

Good idea man, I would be up for it, but I'm just wondering if it's enough for them to hold a tourney for a couple of people just cuz we want it. I guess I'm not really familiar with who puts on the tournaments usually, from what I understand the usual Capcom tourneys are put on by different people. If it were enough for the fans to put one on then I would see no problem with monthly competitions (aside from having my ass handed to me).

Doesn't matter to me. As long as I can get the fuckin game here in the states would almost be enough. Of course we're gonna need some comp but, Its just annoying that the japanese have this huge leap over us with every vf. Simply because soa can't get their heads out their asses. That sucks. If any of you have info on cali spots feel free to tell me.

UK players control the west. If you want to run tournaments you must apply for permission from the UK players first. Other wise we may have to come over there and beat you before you get a chance to learn the game.

Now ask kindly and we may say go ahead.

hey monthly or maybe even weekly tournaments sounds good to me and my bro.... hmmmmm maybe somehow along the tourneys we should rank each who participate...... hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm and since we won't have the vf4 card feature........ hmmmmmmm somehow we should keep a record and rank also but i haven't quite figured out how...... like maybe one of us can just witness each other's win streaks or something and we could create our own ranking system locally and post it up on a website or something like that ,,,,,,,,, just a thought

Yamcha,

Yeah, we need to figure out the logistics early on. Once the machine gets to SVGL (or some other arcade in the Bay Area), I'll speak to the managers to see what we can do for tourney play.
_______________________

Kiuju,

I think *everybody* will be posting location information once the machines start arriving. Also, I'll try to keep VF4fx [locations] as up to date as possible, so we'll know where to get our VF4 fix...
_______________________

Jackybrothas,

Yeah, maybe even weekly or fortnightly competitions might be worthwhile. Everybody goes to SVGL every weekend anyway =P Once the game is released, we should all get together and figure something out.

Derrick,

The UK VF players dislike your commentating and unwanted "advice". Your dynamic-league.com website looks like a fifth-grader creation. Either you're a forum troll just looking to annoy everybody else, or you're just fumbling and bumbling through life as a social misfit. Either way, STFU and STFD you worthless POS.
