With the recent introduction of the live twitter feed (#vfdc), I found that the right side bar became too congested. To alleviate this, I've reinstated the left side bar and moved some content over there.

Essentially, forum and content related stuff is on the left, and social stuff is on the right.

I'm interested in your feedback so let me know how it looks for you, any issues, etc.

Now it's hard to view the entire screen with the same resolution. Things are getting smaller. Plus, it's very weird to browse the main topics on the middle of the screen, instead of starting from the left side bar.

I still prefer to put everything on the right side bar, but as you said that there were too many contents there.

    I like the new organization-by-content-type.

I think making the left column a bit smaller would help

    Same for me.

Hey i just tought that maybe a customization by user is the best thing. Mike you can let people decide which box have in the layout.
Otherwise a popup menĂ¹ would be better. Something that users can open and close. Like that it won't be too much to have on the right.

Is it possible to swap the columns? I kind have gotten used to and miss the content stuff being on the right. Also could we make the Active Topics section a little shorter if it's going to stay on the left side? Either way it should be shorter no matter the side.

Other than that I'm loving the new changes you are making for VFDC. Not that I used twitter, but that feed was long over due. Maybe I'll start tweeting my rage rants from playing online when FS comes out.

^I would rather have the content on the right-hand side too but that's definitely something I could get use to.

Overall I really like the two column break-up and having the threads centered.

oh there's a separate thread for this. i actually just posted what i thought about the new layout in an old thread hoping you'd come across it.
    i'll just copy/paste what i wrote:

i really like how this new layout looks on the main page now. it's a lot more organized, clean, and overall just has a better structure to it.

the text isn't hugging the pictures anymore and the news updates look a lot better in the center like that.

good stuff. gettin' this site all dolled up for FS huh?

to me, it seems constrictive. I'm not a huge fan of the noise of multiple columns filled with text.

Dennis, and anyone else uncomfortable with the layout, let me know what your display resolution is at, and whether you primarily browse fullscreen or windowed.

Personally, I prefer a single side bar on the right, but it just got way too busy to include the current content. If you think the two side bars are too "noisy", then you may have forgotten that this was the original layout from a while back, before the top menu bar was installed. I'm hoping that your natural filter will kick in over time, and I'm not currently convinced this will be the final layout anyway.

Another option may be to reduce the real estate taken up by things like Active Topics, Wiki Updates, and Facebook, then see how that all looks in a single column.

In the meantime, keep the feedback coming.

    Myke,
I just hide those contents of left side bar and now everything becomes normal as before. Personally, the information on the left side bar isn't necessary for me, such as events, active topics, and wiki...,etc. However, I still recommend you can put them on because it might be easier for new members to browse and quickly get used to VFDC.

Anyway, thanks for keeping update! VFDC rock!!

    I hadn't noticed any changes.

That must mean you've done a good job...?

been so long since I've actually looked through options I forgot I could turn off columns. I've taken out the left column and now things look much better (for me).

my only real issue now is the twitter feed that constantly grabs at my peripheral vision as it cycles through the same posts again and again. and again.

can there be an option to not show the twitter box? That was the awesome thing about the FB box. since I had all social plugins turned off at FB that box was just empty. I wish I could do the same with the twitter feed as I find the constant cycling very distracting but want to keep the right hand column for the shoutbox.

I'm with GE on the twitter box. I'd remove it if I could.

Unfortunately, I'm not aware of any way to individually remove/disable the twitter box. I would have to disable it altogether.

For now, I've slowed down the ticker interval from 6 sec (default) to 15 sec. Hopefully this will make it less annoying.

Thought I might share one of my annoyances with the twitter feed, and that is it restarts on every page load. Within a forum environment, pages are being reloaded constantly, unless you're idling.

I'm going to trial a new display format, and that is instead of showing results on loop, it will instead load and display all tweets, currently limited to the 30 latest. This way the newest appears at the top, and past tweets can be browsed via the scroll bar.

Twitter widget re-enabled to assist with debugging.

BTW, I notice the mystery football tweets have now disappeared. hmmm...

Looks like the twitter guys have ironed out the spurious tweets, and I've decided to ditch the left sidebar and put everything back in the right sidebar.

The issue with the post reply/edit toolbar buttons not working in certain browsers is still being looked at.
