The Throws of Lau Chan

As a former 4th Dan now demoted to 3rd (twice), I find one of
the major holes in my attempt to make my Lau a well-rounded
fighter is my inability to throw against Dans of any level (of
Kumite, and even against humans). P+G only turns the position
of the fight, disorienting me with the whole "direction right is now
left", a real problem for a rook like me. Every blue moon I'll get off a
df/df/ P+G, but it is rare.

Is Lau's throw arsenal, one of the best in the game I think, harder
to access because of the damage (meaning, the throws have a smaller
window of opportunity as opposed to, say, Shun's, where the
damage is less)? Or am I not setting up the throws correctly?

I want to stop relying on fist and elbow strikes ONLY, which my Lau
play is slowly turning into, because of my reluctance to go after throws
which may doom me, particularly against a god-damn Jacky.

Read my FAQ (TomDC85's bithin' Lau FAQ). As for throws, just wait for gauranteed throw moves (go through the game's training tasks to see more). Try buffering throws i.e. while defending a kick by holding [G], press [4][6] then release [G] when the kick has finished and hit [P]+[G]. This removes any pause between their move finishing and you doing a good throw. Use a ground attack after this particular throw.

As for the [3][3]+[P]+[G], don't buffer this but use it to duck under high attacks of theirs and throw as it begins with a crouch-dash.

Don't read his FAQ, it's so bad it's not even funny. Wait for guaranteed throw moves? Riiiight. What if opponent does none of those? And, will you be able to block everything? Make it miss? I doubt it. The buffering advice is actually sound but the motions are wrong; you can't buffer b,f - just b. The f+P+G must be pressed without G.

Anyway... a good situation to go for throws is after some of your better-recovering moves MC (interrupt); those moves include P, b+P, d+P and so on. You may also try to throw after staggers (with elbow f+P for instance). A good tactic against the CPU is dash back -> dash forward when CPU closes in and throw. Practice!

Geez GLC, Tom's Lau FAQ isn't bad. You make it sound like it's rubbish, and it's not. If some people bothered to give him some feedback then he could make it better. As a FAQ writer yourself, I would have thought you of all people would understand that.

As for waiting for guaranteed throw moves, it's probably better to change "wait" to "recognise". This is one of the basics one must learn when starting out in VF, and is more valid than the advice of dashing back and forward to throw, IMO.

Geez Myke, have you even read what I had written? It's an AGAINST CPU tactic, he was asking for those too.

Thanks very much for all the informative responses. Being a
newcomer, I expected pretty much to be sneered at. Getting
real-live useful responses is, well, humbling in a certain sense.

Like the fact that you can't do forward P+G while Guarding. That
explains a lot about why I get my ass handed to me every time I try
to buffer in throws like that.

As far as guaranteed throw moves are concerned (and I'm sure
the answer is in one of the many threads on the subject), does a
player of one or several characters need to play ALL the
characters in order to understand what is, say, Lau's Thunder in the Forest
throw...or do you simply recognize the moves that give you
the most trouble (Lightning Hammer Kick or whatever it's called) and
find out if it is throw counterable if blocked?

I probably just answered my own question.

I found out that Lau's elbow really works well to set up a throw.
Just hit [6]+[P] and when it connects (just listen to the sound it makes on the opponent) you follow up with a throw. I like [6]+[P]+[G] and [4]+[P]+[G] the best. They're not difficult to put in and work very well. Damage is quite allright. And depending on the place you are in the ring, they can throw out your opponent. Saved my skin many times this way!

Very cool. I never attempt the throws after down P or forward elbow.
I guess that's as big an indication of scrubbishness as anything, when all
I've ever done is begin the hand technique attacks or float starters, which the
CPU guards against fairly regularly. I only
try to throw when I'm in trouble, or desperate. But I'm eager to try out the
advice I've gotten here. Great stuff.
