Struggling out of staggers technical info...

I have a question for VFDC to help us all (or at least those that don't know)...

When you get staggered and you see the joystick come up on the screen, when do you start struggling???

If you start when the joystick is green, it has no effect on your stagger state until it turns red and then you can struggle.

The question is: If you start too early and struggle when the joystick is green does it slow the stagger down and actually make it take longer???

Is part of the skill of struggling knowing when to start on a move to move basis?

I feel like you struggle much faster if you wait until the joystick turns red. If I start too early I feel like it slows the struggle down and takes longer to get out. If you time it well it only takes a few shakes back and forth to regain your composure but otherwise it might be a little slower.

Escaping staggers is a great skill to have and can save you TONS of damage in almost every match if you do it well.

If anyone knows the logistics or technicalities of struggling out of staggers I'd love to hear from you...

I just move the Joystick left to right as fast as I can, no matter the state of the stagger. Once I see the joystick icon "Shake and bake" time! But, I always figure that once is red, that's it, your done. So, I trained myself to move the Joystick left to right as fast as I can in Dojo mode(2P Mode). Because, if you don't practice on when to stop moving the Joystick back and forth, your going to be standing there waiting to get thrown. Good example, El Blaze low drop kick, when it connects on a standing blocking opponent, it staggers them. So by the time they're done struggling out of the stagger state, I'm already in their face, while they're just standing there. I catch alot of people with this setup, because they're still moving the Joystick back and forth(I could hear it in my headset, lol).

Well, no offence to Gernburgs, but he is actually asking questions. The topic will be useful if we can get to some conclusions. As far as I can remember, we already agreed that it's SO STUPID that the joystick is green when you can't struggle and red when you can.

Also, we are not sure whether struggling during the green "moments" is actually counterproductive rather than just useless (apart from the fact that when the icon will turn red you will be struggling already).

Exactly, the info I mention was all under assumption. I think if we manage to put together a actual description on how to get out of them correctly, it would benefit the community in a great way. A YouTube Video would be great.

There's a thread on the 3rd page of the dojo right now entitled "Discussion on Stagger Recovery..." It basically answers every question here (or at least gives our best guess at the moment... it's extremely difficult to prove exact stagger recovery frames). anyway, there's already lots of info there if you're interested.

To sum up what I know: Struggling during green does, in fact, appear to slow down recovery... waiting till red makes it easier. And, going just left to right also slows down recovery... repeated use of the same joystick directions seems to give diminishing returns. So, a circular motion recovers fastest (the most unique joystick positions). Many top players like to go back and forth between 123 or 789, in order to more easily control whether they're crouching or standing when the stagger breaks.

Thanks for the input, mate. Time to look into it.

Also, I think that button wise, it was important to hold down G while tapping on P and K as if you were possessed by the devil or something.

I dont even think you can set the dojo up to get the timing down.

Sugata, HOLD guard. spin the stick and mash punch and kick.

i dont know because i get out of staggers pretty effectively and i just hold guard and freak out going left and right on the 360 analog stick never hit p or k so i dont know the exact formula

Just for clarification... the reason to hold guard is because that'll ensure you're guarding the same frame that the stagger ends. If you break the stagger, but still just eat the followup attack, there was no point. However, holding guard doesn't actually help break the stagger faster

Also, as far as I know, mashing all the buttons helps same as directions. (Even guard would help... but this is the same as rising where you don't mash kick, not because it wouldn't help, but because you might accidentally get a rising kick that you don't want.)

my technique for stagger recovery on 360 controller rotate stick counter clockwise try to keep it close to its neutral postion while rotating, place ur thumb between G and P and slide it back and forth immediately when joystick turns red mash the stick quickly left and right slide ur thumb between G,P,G ,P ,hold G if u think they will dash and throw input throw escape guard as final input to ur stagger recovery

I always hold guard while wiggling the stick left to right as fast as I can. I usually get a 50% success rate with that.

Yes, but what Sorias said: If you are not holding guard when the stagger ends, the struggling was useless. Thats why the technique is to hold guard and mash all other inputs.

As far as I know, only inputs during the red icon will count. But Id like KoD to test with his programmable stick again.. (Thanks for all the work youve done so far)

Just my 2 cents on it.

When it's green I tap the shit out of /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif till it turns red, when it's red I do a 360 motion (maybe another half too)as quick as possible with the stick and hit /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif as many times as I can during the stick motion, and end with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif
