    Hey guys,

Can someone please explain to me the situations in which I would want to make use of the step-change knee? I see that it's got 24 frames to activate, whereas the Kao Loy comes out in 17.

Is there any reason to use the step-change knee outside of a follow-up to the LD K,K knock-down?

As always, any help would be great!

Well, step-change does 2 more damage, and is actually at less disadvantage on block, though they both give guaranteed punishment. Against someone who can you reasonably expect to block instead of counterhit you, it's more reward for less risk. Since it's so slow, you can use it to make fun of people that reverse the Kao Loy a lot... it won't him them until they're in recovery, lol.

The name "step-change" also implies that it probably switches you from open to close stance. Could be useful to setup slips and phasing turns or something... I don't know brad very well, I'm sure someone else can give you more info.

It's simply slower, telegraphs like hell, does a little bit more damage and launches just a little bit higher (/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif works on normal hit on everyone up to Jacky I believe).

So more risk for more damage. Practical use is very small. It's usable in wall combo's though (after wall splat or super high wall hit with Long Ducking /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif).

I hardly ever see it used, nor use it much myself.

If you hit someone with it you're allowed to gloat though, which is nice.

The best quality this move has, IMO, is that it has 5 active frames. This makes it really good at crushing rising attacks, if you're ballsy enough to try that is.

Another trick from VF4 which still works in VF5 is that if you can make it connect late in the active window, it ceases to be -13 on guard, and depending on how late you make contact it can be uncounterable. A good setup of connecting it late is after the /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif throw. If your opponent will fall recover in place then they'll be forced to guard, provided you time it correctly.

Two key moves where it's guaranteed on guard is after guarding Wolf's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif and Lion's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif.

BTW, despite it's name, it doesn't change foot stance.

OK, so this move has very limited application. I've been able to catch people with it who evade a lot, as it will cause failed evade lots of times because of the frames.

Thanks guys, this is good to know. I've wondered this for a long while - I've hit one or two people with it, but otherwise have just been getting my ass MC'd all day long due to the large start-up delay.

Crushing rising attacks... I'm still paralyzed with fear whenever I see my opponent fall down and me standing near him!

iv used it a few times to punish whiffing buts its pretty hard to time lol

and yes its also good on evaders
just gotta use it instinctively i guess

but...in general i pretty think its only worth using because its just SOOO HOTTTT when it lands lmao

I've been using this move after successful evades too. I find it difficult to check visually, so I reserve it for the situations in which I've detected a pattern that they are using frequently. In these situations, like Sharp7 said, it's a nice easy mega damage combo. Classic pay-off versus risk I suppose.
