The rules regarding signature images have now changed. Until further notice, the image tag won't be recognised in your signature. There are a few reasons behind this change.

I don't want to name names but I was getting tired of having to manually edit people's profiles and remove their sig image because it didn't adhere to some guidelines. I remember one being at 2.9mb!

Another reason, is that it slows the general loading of a page. It's as bad as a site with ads, if not worse, when it constantly has to hit other sites to load in images. And we all know VFDC has trouble loading up on it's own at times /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Now this is more of a personal reason I suppose, but some sig images were just an eye sore. In isolation they may have looked OK, but to scroll through 10 posts where most of the real estate is taken up by sig images is bothersome. I just got sick of seeing them in my face while trying to read through a discussion.

If you need to express yourself visually, do it through the avatar -- that's what it's for. If you need to plug your website, you can still do it through a link in your signature, and there's even a place in your profile for that.

I have already run a script which checked everyones signature for any image tags. If found, the signature was reset and a PM was sent to the user with the old signature for reference. For anyone curious, 83 users had their signatures reset.

I agree with that 100%. I'm running on a cable modem so it all loads smoothly (unless VFDC wants to play with me /versus/images/graemlins/wink.gif ) but if a person with a banner in their sig constantly replies to a pag its just annoying to see the image over and over again.

Quick question though. You said the rules have changed, but will images be taken out of sigs completely or will/is there (now or in the future) still the option to put small pics inside the sigs?

There is no option now, nor will there be one in the forseeable future. You simply cannot use an image tag in your signature. Actually you can, but the image tag just won't be recognised at all. When you go to edit your profile, there's some text there to remind you that, once again, images are not allowed in your signature.
