Question about VF5 and my HDTV...

First off, I'm brand new here so hello to everyone!

My question is this. I have an older Pioneer Elite 52" HDTV. It does 480p/i and 1080i only. I'm planning on getting a PS3 (I already have an Xbox 360) for both Blu-Ray playback and gaming. If VF5 only supports 720p, is there a setting on the PS3 that I can set to pass the 720p singal to my 1080i tv?

For my Xbox 360 games this isn't an issue since the games are already natively passed as 1080i.

Hope that question makes sense! Thanks!

You will be fine with 1080i

I find it very strange that your TV only passes a 480 and 1080 signal, are you sure about that? I am no expert but it makes no sense, especially when I assume a Pioneer "Elite" line of TVs would probably do all that stuff.

100% positive. It's an older HDTV and I've had it for probably 4 or 5 years now. I will display a 720p image; but it can't accept 720p signals. It's native HD resolution is 1080i.

    Dwman_2000,
if your TV does not support 720p, PS3 will downscale 720p games to 480p only. Unlike the Xbox360, the PS3 cannot upscale to 1080i. You can read the details here:

    http://www.beyond3d.com/articles/ps3scaler/

However VF5 is likely to support 1080i/p resolutions natively, so keep your fingers crossed.

Gotcha! I wasn't sure what the upscaling capabilites of the PS3 where internally. That article was a good read! I find it odd that the things I take for granted with my Xbox 360 are issues with the PS3. It's starting to make me re-think my potential purchase!

I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for 1080i support! If there isn't any, then I'll be waiting for the Xbox 360 version!

On a side note, is there a link anywhere to the moveset changes from VF4: Evo to VF5 for all returning characters?

The official ps3 version website at
    http://virtuafighter5.jp/
lists 1080p 1080i 720p and 480p as supported. Early photos of the back of the box list the same. It's always possible that they're lying for some reason, but . . . at any rate, we'll know for sure in about a week.

For movelists, see the individual character threads

    watch out for running 1080i

tekken DR players note that 1080i has some lag issues.

from Zaibatsu, posted by original poster who reported problems w/ 1080i @ a later date:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">I'm glad you brought that post back up actually. After checking the 'net and running tests, it turns out that it's true what I said about 1080i introducing input lag as you play a 1080P game, but on some TVs you can do something about it.

If you want 1080 visuals on certain 1080i-input only HDTVs, you have to set your PS3 to 1080i which gives you the same visuals of 1080P, but the 1080P game is converted from 1080P to 1080i to show it.

Some of those 1080i-input HDTVs then convert the final output to 1080P (Sony SXRD XBR1 for instance), and all of this conversion doesn't affect the visuals or the frame rate at all, but it causes some slight delay from when you input a command and it happening on the screen.

At least for the XBR1 it seems there are solutions. If you connect to that TV via HDMI, you need to turn Direct Mode on and it'll play normally. It softens the picture a bit, which can be manually tweaked to look normal again.

You can also connect with Component cables and turn Game Mode on to eliminate input delay, but the visuals take a hit so you really have to manually tweak the settings to make it look sharp again, but it is possible. I've tried both methods and made the visuals look the same as the normal graphics in either mode, plus input lag is undetectable.

The bottom line is that if your 1080i-input TV has adjustment options like this one, you can have it look and play exactly the same as a full 1080P set.</div></div>

Like others have said, I think VF5 is going to support 1080i natively, so there won't be any scaling needed, which seemed to be the source of the problems here. Also, could have been this guy's TV. Other people in the same thread reported no problems with DR @ 1080i.

Another quick question. When you buy the 60gb PS3 what type of A/V cable comes with it in the box? My TV has component inputs (no HDMI, too old) and VGA. Thanks!

the ps3 ships with composite cables (can't do hd). if you have
ps2 component cables they are compatible with your ps3, but
otherwise you'll have to buy your own.

Man! Sony really rapes you don't they! Here's our HD console, but we can't even include a freaking HD cable. Even my Xbox 360 came with component cables. Guess I'll be holding on to my PS2 component cables!

    Thanks for the answer!

I had this same conversation with my brother the other day. He bought a PS3 and a Wii, both systems make you buy the cables. Really though, you got a blue ray DVD player @ 1080p for $600 bucks. No other system can do 1080P so they don't need HDMI which is the only thing that will pass a 1080p signal.

Are there any other companys shipping HDMI cables with their 1080p products and do those products cost less than $600?

This comment is not directed toward anyone. I see people talking about Sony and how expensive their PS3 is but if you were to buy an XBOX, you are going to pay the same thing for their system with the HD player when its all said and done. Both systems are very compareable.

I don't know where this comes from but I see alot of MBs with people fighting about what system is better. I don't know who these people are or how old they. To me, it would just make sense to own both systems and enjoy the hell out of both of them.
