Online lobbies and spec mode

So I just read that VF5 online will just be a straight up 1 on 1 affair, no lobbies and no spec mode. Its bit disappointing as it would have been nice to just have 3-4 players in a room, DOA4 has rooms that can hold 16 players. Tell me is this Sega being lazy or is it a legitimate concern for online play. Would it really affect the game that much to include a small lobby which would include a spec mode when waiting to fight? How much data is used up when including spectators, can anyone tell me how it works and how much affect it would have?

it prolly would slow the game down I'm guessing.

yeh it would but i think the people playing should be able to make the decision to make rooms that can hold multiple people in it. im sure people are more than capable of making private or open 1v1 by themselves. i think they are being lazy because you could just make the rooms like doau with no lobbies and avatars and only have you GT showing.

It'll slow it down I'm guessing because the game may run at the lowest connection speed, so the more players you have connected to a match, the higher the probability that you'll have someone with a bad connection.

BTW, low_sweep, when are you going to write a VF5 guide? You're not being lazy are you, not writing one?

Oh snap, Low Sweep's been posting in here!
I didnt know you play VF.

Well, back on topic...having straight up one-on-one matches doesnt even give it an arcade feel.
Maybe they can do something like just have the ranked matches one-on-one.
Then have something like SF2HF's quarter mode where a couple ppl can watch and wait their turn.

The thing about lobbies and the reason Sega might now want them in the game, is because it's hard to control who enters the room. Let's say 2 guys with a good connection with each other create a room, matches work quite all right to play. Then a 3rd guy comes in who has a good connection with the 1st player, but not the 2nd one. Then a 4th enters who have a good connection with the 2nd one, but not with the 3rd and 1st one.

I've experienced this with DOA online where the connection quality in a room just get lower and lower.

yeh i noticed that happens a lot in public rooms since you can't control who comes in, but in private 4-6 man rooms with some friends i rarely experience lag.

Does anyone have a more technical explanation on the matter. I'm only going with my experience from DOA4 but if someone in spec is lagging they don't usually affect the people playing until it comes to there turn to play. When people realize they are lagging they are usually smart enough to leave the room, if not then simply ask them politely to leave, so public rooms are'nt really an issue. I have played DOA4 alot since I got into it earlier this year, I have never had any major issues online. We don't need lobbies and avatars like in DOA4, we just need rooms that accept 3-4 people minimum.

Seriously Sega and Namco should be taking notes from DOA4, the amount of online features and modes are simply amazing. At the end of the day I'm thrilled VF5 is online so I can't really complain, its just that alittle bit more effort would greatly enhance the online experience.

Also while I'm here can someone tell whats the most popular VF site aorund?

    Cheers!

My experience is different. Sometimes when I'm in a public room waiting my turn, the match starts to slow down to a crawl. Why? Someone with a really bad connection joined the room. After that person left it went back to normal. So I do think public forums can be problematic, but I do like low_sweep's suggestion to at least include private rooms.

Most popular VF site around? This IS virtuafighter.com

i was never sold on the lobby thing in doa. it was attempting to emulate the sort of social setting you have in the arcade......over the internet. imo, it failed miserably to convey this atmosphere.

also, unless you knew the people playing it was kind of boring having to sit out watching random chumps fight. i'd sooner be playing the game constantly than taking timeouts every few mins.

i think it's probably a good thing am2 are keeping the online simple. that way connection speed is paramount and people are still encouraged to actually get together face-to-face for real gatherings. socially inept folks need not apply /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
