    Hey ya'll,

I have a quick question. I just recently started playing VF4:evo, and I haven't decided on which character I wanted to try to master yet. Now I'm not asking you to tell me who is top tier or anything, I'm not even really asking you to tell me which character to use because I played a while with each character and I got a feel for each character. So I managed to narrow it down to 3 people. Wolf, Jeffry, And Shun. So could you guys please list the pro's and con's of each character, and possibly a suggestion on how each character is played, like if they are a more defensive character or sumthin. so I can make my final desicion. Thanks in advance.

None of your choices are really what one would consider "starting characters", but whatever tickles your fancy... VF4 is balanced enough, especially EVO, that you can't really go wrong with any of the characters..

That said, of the three you've chosen, I think Jeffry is probably the most straight-forward and newbie-friendly... although that could be because I've never really gotten a feel for Wolf. Both of the big guys play somewhat similarly, and your goal with either should be to set up your super-damaging throws. Their main con is that neither is particularly swift, having slower basic attacks (punches, elbows, etc.) than most of the competition... But for straight damage, well.. wow.

What I would NOT suggest you do is pick Shun as a first character. He's fairly difficult to use, especially when one takes into account the fact that you need to keep your drinks up to be dangerous.. But play him for a bit, and see how it goes.. everybody finds their groove with a different character.

These boards are full of information (but use the search option instead of posting random tactics requests, or oldtimers will yell at you), and Evo itself has a huge store of replays to watch, good tactics advice and a great training mode which should help immensely.

Quick Jeff tips, cause he's the one I know: Your most damaging throws are those which end in the [3] or [6] directions, but those are the first ones opponents will try to break, so vary it up. Jeff is at his core a nitaku (two choices) character. When you're at an advantage (say, after landing a counter-hit jab, or blocking a big move), you can either go for a hugely damaging throw or a powerful combo like his [K][K][P] or knee float combos. Plus, his [1][P]+[K] guarantees a low throw on a hit, and you have three of them, so escapes can be tricky. Jab-throw flow charts are extremely useful, so practice them.. but don't toss out too many of his huge, slow, powerful attacks because they tend to be very easy to counter-attack if blocked (with the exception of his [6][6][K], which leaves you at a slight advantage, although it's slow to come out... use it from range. Finally, your shot knee [4][K] is a useful attack when you need something quick, but beware because you ARE at a disadvantage if it hits and you haven't followed it up with the canned punch.

Anyway, pick whoever, play for a while and see what they can do.

I want to go out on a limb here and say pick the one that you like the most.

Just because a character is more difficult to use doesn't make using him any less rewarding.

I just don't want you to go down the path of having picked a character that's easy over a character that you like... each character has a lot to offer. And don't be afraid to switch characters. I switched 3 times...

Wolf - big risk, big reward. You must have nerves of steel and quick reaction time since his key moves require multi-directional inputs (HCB [P], 100 point Giant Swing mainly). I really like Hiro's description of Wolf...he's like a highly tuned Formula 1 engine. In the right hands, he's really scary, but in incompetent hands he just doesn't seem that great.

Jeffry - character that relies on solid fundamentals. Jeffry has the tools to compete, but you need a good understanding of game basics (i.e. advantage/disadvantage, delay attack, nitaku situations, spacing, etc.). Of the three you've narrowed down to, he's probably the easiest character to learn.

Shun - requires in-depth knowledge. Shun is probably one of the more different characters in the game. To be really good with Shun you'd have to be familiar with his drinking game (IMO, or at least the THREAT of his drinking game). I also am in the opinion that Shun should be played a lot more defensively/machi than other characters, though he can certainly be played offensively.
