New Arcadia Article about VF:5 R

    The new mag is out. I'm sure a proper translation will be out by Myke and Nin and co. But for now apparently you'll be able to do a side turned block apparently. Maybe Sega feel side turned situations are too strong ?

    Certainly sounds interesting.

    Shou took Danny and I to a bookstore in Shibuya to check out that Arcadia issue. In it was a Q&A article with Kataoka where they mention the new side guard ability, but not much else was apparently revealed.

    If you visit the Famitsu link on the VFDC front page news post about VF5R you'll see that the last image shows Jacky doing a side guard against Akira's double palm.

    Neither of us bought the magazine so I doubt a full translation will be coming (from us anyway).

    Hmmm...I like the sound of the side-block being implemented into the game, it really does add another layer of the "R"-reality, into the game.

    Sorry but when I look at that picture of Jacky it does not look like he is side blocking to me. It looks like a normal standing block.

    i never thought side turned situations was "too strong", well i hope they implement more than a side block in the game, i hope some one gets a translation soon

    If there will be side-turned guarding->Then why need side-turned situation?! or why need for ex. OM to enemy's side?!...((...All of it will be useless?!

    Not if you have to press up or down and G to side block.

    With that speculation on side-guard controls in mind, I'm curious to see how low attacks like sweeps factor in side-guarding. it's still obviously to early to see how this will play out, but this sounds interesting.

    your frames might be different after a side block too. Good job am2 adding a new layer with side blocking. I can't wait to see those animations.

    I never thought that last picture was any different from a regular block either.

    I don't like the sound of side-guarding. It's not as if players are always side-turned and getting pasted because of it.

    Although, I'm guessing that /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif no longer reverts a character to front facing now - at least this would mean guarding after side-turning moves (Wolf /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, Akira /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif etc) would still leave you sidal, allowing for more side-throw and side-low throw situations.

    I trust Am2 completely however, and I'm sure whatever they do will be for the best.

    I do think the Jacky guard picture from VF5R looks slightly different - but I would have never guessed it was a completely new type of guard.

    Just a side note: I think choosing Jacky to represent this new guard in the released images was a bit of a mistake as his stance seems to hide the way he is facing slightly - for some reason I find El Blaze and Jacky backturned isn't as visually obvious as the other characters as their bodies seem to be twisted funny. El Blaze Backturned looks as if his sideways - it's not instantly recognizable as it is with the other characters. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/crazy.gif

    I think side guarding is a great idea, IF:
    - it's designed so that if you guard after being side turned, you can be side-thrown easier.
    - nothing changes in terms of hitting with moves from the side
    - there will be side turned fuzzy...
    - ...which can be beat by low-side-throwing

    Oh, and give Jeffry his old side low throw back, so we can have fun doing that /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

    like somebody earlier said, i think side blocking removes the purpose of OM, DM and setups that leads to sideturned attack situations. i don't like the idea.

    I imagine they still have to recover as well. You don't go insta block from a move because someone goes to your side I imagine. Now with side guard can we have some side attacks/counters?

    I think it calls for more side-turning moves - and the moves that already side-turn could leave the opponents sideways for slightly more frames - making side-defense more prominent. And also some side specific attacks to make it more favourable to stay side-turned. So players don't just switch to facing forwards whenever they are side on.

    For crying out loud, how about you all reserve judgement until more solid information is known?

    It does not remove the purpose of OM and DM at all. It's not like you cannot guard when you're side turned right now. What we know about side turned situations right now is that you're at a -3f disadvantage.

    So maybe side guarding as some effect on that? Maybe it negates the -3f disadvantage you're at when you try to normally face forward when sideturned? Or think about guarding Akira's 64P+G -> 2 or 8P+K sequence. Maybe it's a way to put you into a sticky guard situation? Maybe it'll be difficult to do on the fly and will actually give you some other reward?

    The fact is we don't know, so let's not all jump to conclusions just yet. Posting your opinion based on nothing but the two words of "side" and "guard" just adds useless noise.
