Leonard McCoy's Aoi Diary Goes Live!

I actually wanted to publish this news later on, when my online blog features more articles; but, as Jyro has written such a comprehensive throw command list with damage indicators, I simply couldn't hold back on this.

I started the blog in order to get the Guide project starting. Writing a guide takes up pretty much time; thus, the audience has to wait quite a bit until they see the final result. If you write a long guide or FAQ then it's mostly an one-man project only featuring your in-sights which might be limited. Therefore, I created this blog-like non-profit diary over at WordPress (after bothering with several design choices).

Leonard McCoy's Aoi Diary (Click link)

I haven't finished writing most of the basis articles yet, as it consumes quite a good portion of my time (but I like writing it all down). My next big page article over at my blog will hopefully feature the Golden Book Combos, an updated, more detailed Black Book Combo list with annotations.

I hope that someday the diary features enough contents to sum it up in a huge (book-like) AOI VF5 FAQ. Tell me what you think, will ya?! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

Wow. Nice man... I don't play with Aoi but I sure wish we had something like that for Shun.

Sam, simply start one yourself; it's really this easy. All kinds of blogs look quite well designed nowadays, and setting one up is more than easy and free of charge at WordPress.com.

Good stuff Leo. Saw you online yesterday but you were set to away. Maybe I play against you Aoi one day. Again good stuff.

I started working on the Golden Book Combos just having finished the universal combo for Aoi. If you have anything to add, please comment on my side or here, so I can add it as soon as possible.

Also, if you want to write a VS. character guide (VS. Akira, etc.) for Aoi it would be highly appreciated and added to the Golden Book featuring character-specific insights, and combos.

    This is a recommendation bump:

I would like to see information on how to effectively apply her /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif moves in the right situation(s).

I would also like to understand the properties of some of her more obscure moves such as /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, qcf/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif vs. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif vs. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, etc...

Hope this isn't asking too much.

I will to my best ability contribute whatever I can on the above topics after I free up some time to go back to VF, but in the meantime this is just a primer and invitation to anyone who already knows this stuff, and to get the ball rolling again of course.

Solfizz the black arrows are for directions you are supposed to hold for a bit and if I'm not mistaken you simply need to tap the directions for those moves you mentioned. For these you use the white arrows.

You want to use white arrows for all those moves, black means hold, but here goes...

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is her standard elbow. It should be used like all elbows in the game. Standard mid attack that's fast enough to punish low punches, learn to use it a lot.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, by itself I consider this move useless. However, her /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif moves are notable for looking extremely similar, and the first being mid, then high, and the second being high, then mid. That second mid on the P+K move has some potential to hit if you can set up some mind games with the two attacks. I don't actually do this myself, so don't ask me for examples, but it's there if you want to play with it.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif if one of her staple range attacks. Hits mid, staggers (easy to follow with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif if your opponent doesn't recover), great move when you need to close distance.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif are all sabakis. The command list on this site can tell you what they sabaki in particular. Use them to punish predictable opponents. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is particularly notable for going through mid elbows, learn to use /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif effectively, and then use this move when you see a /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif coming.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is notable for being a vital point crumble on counter hit. Great short range attack with some pretty good damage potential if you get a hit with it.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif... not a move I use as much myself, but I think it's a special mid? Meaning it's a standing attack, but you can't be hit high while in the middle of the move. I believe it has decent range, and the special property is always valuable if you know how to apply it. Maybe someone else can comment more on specific uses.

    Naw. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is hella good:

13i half circular that combos on any hit (as long as you don't delay, second hit is can be /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif-cancel (throw/elbow set up), and it's knockdown punishment at -13?! Second hit is counterable on block, but just learn to hit check it.

Don't forget that /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif is a good way to close distance and sometimes setup a throw as well.

Depends on the character you're playing against.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif is really good against DS Vanessa players that whore-out with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif. Leads to BT /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif combos afterwards.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif is not a sabaki, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is. This move can only work after so long before it stops being useful. However, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif is decent, because at least it is half-circular, but /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is so much better. The only real use /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is to get the advantage after it's blocked (but good opponents will just step it.

Best used at +4 or better (at +4 it beats /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif). Like after hitting /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, getting /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif blocked, etc.

It is a normal mid now.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, unless it was change even more, kicks ass. Against characters with powerful sabaki tools, like Lei Fei or Shun, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif makes a great panic move. Sure, it has no range... but its a 13i MID attack with no sabaki counter and staggers on MC.

Can you say fucking good (for a given situation)?

It also goes under highs, much like /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif (maybe wrong, will test in a bit).

Eh, I feel bad that I never made that post I told Solfizz I would. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif

    Vanessa-esque thread? -confirmed-

Awesome, knew I'd learn something if I got the ball rolling.

I never knew 6P+K was half circular... that does make it way, way better.

And cool info on 43P, I knew it was an amazing attack, but hadn't taken the time to figure it out yet.

I'm on it writing new stuff for my Aoi Blog. The next article will be about Aoi's sabakis. As well, I'm still uncertain how to arrange numerous parts of the blog, and the article. A good thing to have would be a commented move list (with usage and follow-up info), wouldn't it?

Apart from that, her circular moves are surely not too numerous. However, I am in love with her non-linear, partly circular /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif which is also safe.

  15. Sorias

    Sorias Well-Known Member

Yeah, commented move list would be cool... though it could really get overly long, have to figure out what's worth including. I guess in some ways that's why a wiki setup can be nicer than a blog... don't need to ever worry about how things are arranged since it doesn't end up in little individual posts when you're done. Not that that's a criticism, your blog is pretty awesome.

I always suck with half circular moves... if there's one thing I just can't do in this game, it's keep track of foot position. That said, in the words of Yosuke... "2K+G is a good move, be careful when.... oh wait, you only play americans right? In that case, use it all the time, it's guaranteed."

His expert advice has served me well so far.

hahaha to the Yosuke comment! When I played him earlier this week, low and behold, he was the first and only player I've encountered who was able to sidestep out of that move.

    HOW do you do that??

DM evades dodge only linear attacks.
OM evades can dodge circular attacks.

That said the OM dodge isn't guaranteed like the DM... you have to really be right on top of your opponent, and the OM will take you so far to the side that you'll be completely behind the hitbox for sweeps. At least I think that's how it works... I'm not very good at it.

I was very sad to discover that "Leonard McCoy's Aoi Diary" is not available anymore.

    Does someone knows why?

It was full of good information.
