Japanese arcade opening hours

This may seem like an odd question, but please humour me...I'm trying to settle an argument.

For those of you who've been to Japan, I was wondering what are the opening hours of the good arcades (i.e. Kani-spo, or others that good players frequent)? When are the best times to find decent competition? I heard that Tokyo shuts down after midnight - is that true, for arcades or otherwise?

    Thank you so much.

When I was there 2 years ago, the majority of the arcades that I went to in Tokyo, including kani-spo, closed at around midnight. I remember specifically because the arcade was packed as I went to the bathroom and then under a minute later when I came out the place was completely vacant, as everyone was running to catch the train.

If my memory serves me right, I think there was an arcade in ikebukuro that was open until 1. Myke was telling me of some place that was open all night, but I don't recall where.

The best time for competition at Kani-Spo would be Friday and Saturday night, 8-10 pm. This is pretty much the peak, but you can still get a lot of competition a couple hours before and after (a helluva lot more than in the U.S. at least). I do think Kani closes at midnight though.

Previously, a lot of arcades in Japan closed way past midnight and there were a few 24 hour places, but legislation changed that (not sure way--guessing that it was ruining the youth of Japan). Now the only arcades that open late or mostly considered Pachinko joints.

Correct me if I'm wrong on any of the above.
