is it the gameplay or me?

okay, why is it that when I play virtua fighter 5 on my ps3, I seem to not get any better at it?

At first, I thought I should use an easy, quick character like jacky. But, after I got into a few fights with Akira, lei fei and brad. I just couldn't beat them.

So, I thought "maybe I need to know some complex moves and techniques." so, I ditched Jacky and used lei fei. Okay, now I see more wins and better control on my character, but, each time I keep on training, the more and more. I feel like there's a wall constricting me, there's no "flow" in my gameplay.

When a character is on the floor, you can only hit him once.
When you want to use a specific move, you have to be ontime with each button or your character won't perform that attack.
When you want to jump, he does a side dash, when you want a side dash he does a jump.
when you are thrown, before you hit the floor, you are suppose to hit any button so he will land softly. But chances are, i only got that working twice out hundred times.

I keep practicing and practicing to get better at it. But I can't! I really feel virtua fighter is too strict on its own rules, which is why I feel I'm constricted.

(oh my god, the AI is like... Impossible to beat sometimes. Reads every move, blocks every attack, avoids each throw, times it perfectly when to dash each of my attacks.)

Now, with tekken, very lenier, its the exact opposite of virtua fighter.
I wish AM2 made this game more lenier, easier for more people to enjoy it.

    My 2cents~

    Lei Fei still fucking rules!!!!!!!!!!

I say you should quit while you're ahead.
P.S. Here's how you beat the computer.
punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch.

    Should be dead if not....

punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch.

Honestly... sugarman is not lying. You can look at the top people on clearing arcade. Even with AKIRA, one just did pp, pp, pp, pp, pp... ALL the way through dural. He never did another move.

Quest mode might be a bit tougher though... haven't seen that done in quest mode.

noooooo!!!!!! don't play Tekken!! Dont take the good the easy way out. YES its a hard game at first. But youll get the hang of it. Remember, forget about playing vs the computer. Concentrate on how to fool a human opponent. A friend could help by controlling the dummy at the Dojo. Also borrow a copy of VF4 for PS2 and do the WHOLE TUTORIAL. After that youll see you will enjoy the game a lot. Guaranteed!! SEGA made the game like this so it would be very competitive. It gives a great rewarding feeling when you finally understand and get the ''feeling'' of the game. Just have a little faith, take the challenge and you'll see what I mean.

As opposed to Tekken, where you can hit them on the floor as much as you like and KO them while they try to stand up? I wasted enough of my time on that mess (VF, DOA and SC only from now on).

Seriously though, I have never understood why people think VF is so hard to play. Obviously at high level competition it becomes highly complex with ETEGs, attack mix ups, damaging combos in different situations, ring positioning, Abare etc etc, but to just play to learn your moves and win against the AI or low level players it is no harder than DOA or Soul Calibur, all it takes to know enough about the game to win (especially against normal difficulty AI) is when to guard, when to attack and when to throw. Once you get your defense and offense good enough, then you can start learning the other stuff (escaping, quick roll, throw escapes, reversals and such).

Seriously, this game is not hard to get to grips with. It's only mastering it that's hard.

PS. Tekken is a joke (and not a funny one).

  6. Don't get me wrong, I love this game, but it is fairly hard to get to grips with compared with other fighters.
I don't have a problem with that, as I'm enjoying the challenge and depth of the game, but I can at least see where the OP is coming from.

For starters the execution of some moves feels far stricter than the Namco fighters, making it already more challenging before you even factor in learning the application and properties of the moves. Then there's the variations in the move's effects in open and closed stance, as well as the differences of those moves when applied to certain weight classes.
That's a fairly steep learning curve if you're new to the series and it's a hell of a lot to take in if you're new to fighting games.

Basically, if you put a lot into it, you'll get a hell of a lot out of it, perhaps much moreso than any other fighter. There's a lot of satisfaction to be had when things start to fall into place.

no, when you are thrown, our launched or whatever. You hit p+k+g right as you hit the floor to recover quickly. you don't just press 'any' button.

If someone is slow to rise, you can keep kicking them on the floor as much as you want. (you may eventually get pushed out of range, but you can certainly kick them more than once).

    </div></div>

I have no idea what you mean by side dash, but /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif is for evading. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/ub_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif (/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif works also) is for jumping. Entirely different moves.

Maybe because the command is actually /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif, not "any button" ?

    It's you, not the gameplay.

Oh, and don't play lei-fei if you want to learn how the game works.

I remember playing VF 4 with Akira and not being able to pass a 3rd dan Rank. But then I went through the tutorial and shot up to a High King in a few weeks. I also started playing every character as well - and good too

    Yeah, pretty much nails it.

Check the Wiki, it explains the system adequately.

That is one non sequitur, given the lack of tutorial, and ______, and _____, and so on.

Reading manuals is so last millenium - in VF6 the martial arts will be uploaded into your mind Matrix-style /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/tired.gif

Not to be devils advocate atlhough the wiki has a lot of answers
it's not exactly the easiest thing to sit there and study. I had
to explain to a friend of mine how to even read the damn adv/dis
    charts and he's a chemist.

Now a DL'able wiki would save some eyes.

Uh...as opposed to what? To do a specific move, you don't have to hit the right buttons on time? Randomly pressing buttons will result in a specific move that you want to do?

The game as is, is rock solid and it is entirely on you. You lack the basic discipline to deal with a game that is one of the most balanced overall and magnifies every mistake you make because it is there are no glitches to cover up for a lack of skill like one would see clearly in Tekken or Soul Calibur. The learning curve is steeper in VF but has many rewards when you learn it. If you want to take VF from a beginners point of view play VF4 evolution on PS2 the training mode on it translates to VF5 and shows you the basic outline to use every character overall. You may have to relearn moves for VF5 but you have a solid feel for the game overall and find it very easy afterwards. The best thing about that game is PS2 are cheaper than PS3 and your PS3 might play the game depending on which PS3 you bought (mine play PS1, PS2 games as well.)

Does he understand the concept of frames?

I mean, we've already found out that because one is a chemist doesn't mean they understand how ping works (haha, do a search).

Let me first say, Virtua Fighter isn't as popular in my area (PA, USA!) unlike Tekken. So playing the game with a friend isn't as easy as you may think. Because everyone here rather play DOA or Tekken, or they plainly don't care about VF.

Also, I have VF4: Evolution, I did the tutorial and to be honest with you. The whole thing made me feel more like "this shit feels more like a chore than an actual game." I understood the whole concept behind what AM2 is trying to pull of here with its game, but, the casual player who wants to try this game out will not find this interesting.

Honestly, think, why is Tekken, SC, DOA even Street Fighter more popular more accepted by eastern/western audience than VF? Why do i see a Tekken machines in more american arcades and i barely see (next to none) any VF arcade machines (hell, if it was a VF4machine at least,,but no).

It's because VF's gameplay obstruct it, it's set for hardcore players and the people who want to get in and play the game will surfer more.

Let me ask you guys this: Why doesn't SEGA make the game more user friendly by adding something interesting in the story, hell give a good story to the game and people will play the game just to see how the story unfolds in the game.

Why don't they give players something more accessible in it's tutorial. Not make you feel like you are about to fall asleep during its tut. Have a voice actor to read you the rules, have a computer or a cut scene show you step by step on things are done. Make things more interesting.

Well although to you it seems plain as day you have to admit, not everyone finds it very obvious. Shit my clock on my VCR still blinks 12:00....o shit just dated myself.
