Is it possible for a beginner to use Lei-Fei?

I'm incredibly new to VF but Lei-Fei looks very cool with all his different stances and his style reminds me of all the low-budget movies I love to watch.
Is it possible for a newbie to play as Lei-Fei and build up with him or is he too difficult to use? ATM I use Brad, who seems somewhat simple.

Actually, Lei is pretty easy to start off with and win (against people of your own rank). One of the easiest beginner characters in a fighting game, his moves are fast and have awesome properties, and doesn't take much mechanical input skill to pull off. They have some problems against slightly better players who can evade and deal with them, but you won't run into these type of players for a while (and by then you'll probably have learnt to deal with them)

Definately much easier than Brad, IMO.

Even with all those fancy moves? It seems hard to memorize what moves you would be doing.

Mess around alot at first and you'll be surprised how far you'll get. What's your gamertag? I'll invite you to a player match sometime and we can mess around.

Actually, we don't have one yet. Well, we don't have live. Should get it this week though so much schoolwork it is a joke.
If a gamertag is just your name then it is Socca. Not used to Xbox at all, N64 FTW!

Cozby is right...don't worry about memorizing it, just mess around with him...you'll be surprised at how well you'll do without knowing what you're doing:)

But the whole fun of Lei-Fei is knowing how to control his movements. It is not as gratifying knowing that it was done by luck. He now has six different stances. Makes for tons of variation and animation. Its exciting executing the fluid stream of stance changes and movements. If I was a beginner, I would use someone simple such as Jacky, Lau, Goh to learn the fundamentals of the game first.

Lei is very easy to use and very fun to use for the most part but when you play better players you have to learn to mix up the way your set ups come out or they get very predictable. That is fun of it how to creatively mix up your set ups to where the enemy can't tell which way you are going all the time. Great Lei Feis are fun to play against but are few and far between I hope to see more in next few days to so

In VF4, in the manual, they used to list character difficulty, generally by ease of use, they had them split into 1,2 and 3 start ratings. Lei-fei was unique in that he got two ratings... they put him as 1 star because he's one of the easiest characters to button mash succesfully, but also 3 star, because his stances can make learning the technical details unusually hard. I'd say that's still true in VF5. He's definitely far easier than Brad, though, who is 3 stars straight across... learning slipping and phasing turns is not for the faint of heart.

    Really Brad is complex? Damn...

The thing that's complex about Brad is understanding slipping right vs. slipping left. It doesn't actually describe towards his right/left hand side. It's towards his back or towards his stomach (I forget which is which), completely dependent on which of his feet is currently farther forward. So, you need to know which attacks of his change his foot stance, which attacks are available from slipping right vs. slipping left (since they're completely different), and know at any time which direction to push to get the correct slipping direction for whatever attack you want to do.

Completely over my head... but the information you need to know seems to be well published (on this very forum, in fact). Every charcter has some level of complexity, so it's not like Brad is crazy unusual, and almost every character benefits at least a little bit from understanding foot stance (it changes what your max damage combo is, most often), just all about what you're willing to put in the time to learn.

I just picked up vf in general 2 months ago. Lei seemed the closest to Taki in Soulcalibur as far as game-style so the transition was decent. But he was pretty easy to pick up and run with.

Me too. I thought it should have been "Is it possible for a beginner NOT to use Lei-Fei?"

Its actually easier to train people to use Lion. When I introduce friends to the game I insist they start with Lion, Lau or Jacky.

Lei in my opinion is easy to pick up and win against very inexperienced opponents. At the begining, a basic knowlege of the stances will give you sucess against unskilled players, But that doesnt mean he is easy play. Against experienced or even talented inexperienced opponents you will need to have a clear understanding of both the stances as they are presented, and unorthadox options(such as switching mid string to other stance options and not for show "Lei Dancing"). Doing all of this coherently (and quickly) while maintaining a defence takes time. I started the VF series when it came out for the 360, and Lei was and is my only character. Offence wasnt too hard to pick up, but learning defence took time since Lei's style often leaves you without many defencive options. Really, he has no weakness in himself, often though, Lei has a way of exposing the weakness of the player using him. Lei is the true free form "IQ test". The smarter and more creative you become, the more Lei's moves will open up to you. Type in "Lei Fei the man" on Youtube and see what I mean. Good Luck.

Thx for the insight. I'm a new player too and decided to learn Lei Fei as my first character. Those vids were very encouraging /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

I was a little discouraged last night when I got rocked by some 5+ Dan's and couldn't even land some basic combos as they pummeled me, but I chalked it up to not knowing Lei's moves yet nor all the nuances of the engine.

<s>On that note, are there any moves that seasoned Lei Fei players would recommend new players should take a look at first? Don't misunderstand me. I plan on going through his entire moves list to see everything he has. I'm just wondering if any Lei pro's could point us n00bs to some of Lei's more high-utility/low-risk moves that we can start getting familiar with before we start fighting consistently-harder people where those (supposed) moves become a necessity.</s> Searching RULES! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

    Thx for the help.

Look at the black boos strategies, you want to practice dojo until you can do his combo finisher in your sleep: the duck punch; downforward, donwforward punch; L2 (to stance change; kick, kick (his jumping double kick)
This is his best follow up, i suggest you practice it for a decent time in dojo to begin each session, and then play quest until you are comfortable throwing it out in actual competition. Just my thoughts /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif
