How long does it take to get rusty?

How long do u guys think it takes to get rusty? My bro talks like it's a necessity for him to play Every night to avoid slipping in his game. The shout box made me consider this. Worst was saying he don't play all the time, and seven5suited said he lost some of his bad habits during 2 month break. I don't see how taking a break is going to make ya better? I know it's not really important, but whats the general consensus on how much needs to be played to maintain level of play and how much to get better. Assuming that u are already a strong player (let's say 7th/8th dan or above)? thanks all.

When your not playing the next guy is, think of it that way. I'm practicing and you're not... I'm still learning and experimenting but you're not playing at all. You're probably gonna fall behind eventually. Practicing your inputs NEVER hurts, that's the first thing you lose. When you aren't in practice the speed of your game will slow down too because you're going to have to think about your next move a little more.

For me, I need to take a break from time to time. I develop bad habits too quickly when I play a lot. Although, whenever I'm away from playing the game, I study frames a lot and visualize playing in my head. Just so that mentally i won't be behind so much.

Oioron is super right about visualization. Studying the frames and just thinking about VF helps. I believe Konjou said that he thinks about VF a good amount even when he's not playing and that it helps his game. It really is good advice.

I find taking a few days break even a week sometimes really improved my game, but I spend the time away researching vF a lot instead of actually playing it- visualization. It's crucial and mentally your brain doesn't know the difference from visualization and the real deal so it can be really helpful, but it's hard to do sometimes.

A few days or so, my pai she is a quick study however even if I am rusty and haven't played for a while. my other mains fall off dramatically if I lay off of them for as much as few day because Vanessa isn't the easiest person to play even for me as and Aoi's defensive timing and fakes for me requires continual practice otherwise she get slaughtered if I play good people or a hard CPU.

This is true. If i get my ass handed to me bad. I leave VF alone for like a day and study what i did wrong, Go to dojo against that character check the properties of the move that gave me the most trouble and how to neutralize it, Make the Opponent take less options so for a so on. All in all 2 weeks will make me rusty.

It's not easy learning or using an Advanced level character such as Aoi. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif

I stopped playing video games more or less for 10 years and started playing vf5 in Jan 2007. Took me about a year to get back to a similar skill level as I had in vf3.

My take on it, I never stopped playing video games cold turkey and have like a
good 15+ years behind me of semi regular gameplay. I think this is one of the
reasons why I can play like 2 hours a week or less and still be competitive. Now
if you want to be good - good, you really should stay on top of it. Experience
can speak volumes but hammer your basics and play consistently if you want
    to bridge gaps.

One things for sure; my play speed changes if I haven't been playing a lot.
(not that I'm the quickest player out there)

depends on what one means by rusty...

theres a sort of zone that I get into after a couple good matches... my stance changes are quicker and more accurate, my timing is better, my dashes are better, etc... but i can easily fall out of this zone after about 15 minutes...
problem is, itll happen when i play against less experienced players or the computer as well... and the weird thing is, its like im a magnet for 10th kyu's... who really enjoy joining about 15 times in a row:\

Very well said. It can be said I have huge amounts of VF experience from past years since VF2, but it doesnt matter in a tight spot unless I have done recent practise and ensured that I can do what needs to be done consistently enough. I have also found that my sense of timing deteriorates when Im having pauses from playing. This means I eat much more attacks and am unable to punish stuff (like evades) that I need to.

I feel this has been my problem, I have neglected that practise. Instead I get bored and keep couple weeks pauses when my play.
