How do you select the alternate (B) costumes?

I have the PS3 version, and don't have any costume packs yet, but there still is an indicator on the character select screen stating there are two costume variations available. However, I cannot figure out how to do this. No button presses, or combinations, will change the outfit from "A" to "B". Is there a way to choose the alternate costume (other than playing versus, and both players picking the same character)?

If playing online, you have to select it before entering a match at the regular character select, you can't change costumes at a lobby unless you customize and save it to the menu. Sort of tedious to have to make separrate customizations for the default costumes, but oh well.
