Goh's Top 10 Moves

Taking a page out of the Wolf sub-forum, and realizing that there's a lot of interest to play Goh here in the U.S., here are my top ten moves for the assassin and a brief description of why:

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
Low punch should make every character's top 10 moves.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif
This is Goh's standard attack counter at +11. After the /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif Goh can consider going for a BT /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif or a BT /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif. Also used after a successful /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif sabaki. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif in general is a good move for Goh because it's an easy way to interrupt and initiate a throw/mid guessing game.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
Hits high but executes quickly at 14 frames, and now always knocks down on hit. This is a great counter at +14 but is also fantastic in punishing failed evades.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
Goh's staple mid attack in VF5. The second punch combos after the first on normal hit making this move effectively a 15 frame, 34 damage, -8 on block attack that hits mid-mid. Not only can you use this to poke but you can use it to set up guessing games. E.g., /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif (wait) > /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif throw or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif (delay) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif. The second /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is -1 on normal hit but I think that's very low cost relative to reward.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
One of the few low attacks in the game that is uncounterable on block. It also has great distance and Goh ducks low under many attacks. Although it is -3 on normal hit, Goh can use shoulder ram, back dash, dodge, or sabaki to regain the initiative.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif
Best sidekick in the game. Knocks down on normal hit, can be comboed on counter, fast, safe, etc. Good poke.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif
High damage potential on counter, 17 frames, middle attack, and only -9 on block. The move's only weakness is its short range. Use after /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif (preferably on hit), when you have the advantage, or after blocking a big move from an opponent.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif
Still Goh's best long range attack. It looks slow, but it actually executes in 19 frames. Great damage potential on counter hit.

    270/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif
His most damaging throw. It takes off more than Kage's best TFT combo! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif

    270/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif
Second most damaging throw. Takes off about the same damage as Kage's best TFT combo!! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/sick.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cry.gif

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif > /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
Third most damaging throw. If the opponent cannot struggle out of a ground throw, it's time to celebrate because the throw becomes worth 40 + (50% * 30) = 55 points in the long run, but more if you have better yomi.

OK that's 11 moves but primarily because low punch shouldn't count.

Some other good moves that should feature in your arsenal, in roughly the order of importance in complementing the above 11:

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif to beat fuzzy guard

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif lost some range in VF5 and feels slower, but the damage potential is higher and it is now unescapable (yes!)

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is a good circular attack with an insurance option in the follow-up punch

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif sabaki to beat elbows and punches. I would not go into the Tsukami throw but instead dash and throw

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif to sabaki low punches (/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif will definitely combo, basara will combo depending on frame advantage) and to get instant crouch

Basara to punish -20 and when high damage is needed

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d_.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif for its evasive properties, useful since Goh has a few key moves that leaves him at disadvantage on normal hit. Best used when in open stance

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif > /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif when you need slightly more distance than /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif but not so much distance as /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, i.e. staggers

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif can be hit-checked easily for relatively safe and good damage

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is a decent poking tool, but needs 19 frames

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif evades and hits low

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is Goh's standard 14 frame elbow but I'd personally rather go for /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif has been sped up to 22 frames and now offers compelling damage reward. Also safe on block

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif will be used mostly in combos, but it can also be used to poke

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif to beat elbows and clash against throws

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif to sabaki sidekicks

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif will be used a lot but more within combos

Another way to think about the top 11 moves:

    Quick attacks: /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
Short range combat: /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, throws
    Medium range combat: /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif
    Long range combat: /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif

Hope these are enough to get potential Goh fans started!

Though not the best in the barrel /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif deserves a mention I think. The other low next to /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif//forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/u.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif you'll end up throwing out now and again. Its a notorious bad practice to spam it though.

The immensely unsafe /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/d.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif really are no option, even with the free lowthrow on MC of the first of the two.

Also never forget to employ the other two hit throws.
    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif (MC) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif
And the sped up unblockable crescent
    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif (hit or block) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif

But then I love rolling out those hit throws, especially the low kick one, which can be employed quite safely if you pick up on your opponent's back dash > counterattack routine.

Cool, Cool Ice-9 because Goh is one of my favorite fighters. VF5 will be my third game in the series, so I am a relatively a newbie and can use all the help I can get. Thx!

This has been bothering me for a long time and I'm glad to see 43P in your list Ice.

In videos of VF5 I almost never see that move and I have no clue why. They seem to only like using 1K+G as their low which I do not understand.

1K+G can only be stepped in one direction and knocks down on mC, and if used after a backdash plus 1K+G's long range, landing it after the opponent's whiff isn't too hard. I don't abuse it, but I've used it to great success 4 times on Jin, Korea's Greatest as KTallguy says.

I still like 43P and most of the time 1K+G (though I think it avoids highs too) just isn't worth the risk.

I like 1k+g more than 43p because 1k+g doesn't telegraph itself as much as 43p and it's semi-circular. Also, at 23 pts of damage, it can crush a rising attack. Finally, it's one of the few moves Goh has that can grant a knock down, which is nice. Getting a 2 or 8 k+g on an ukemi after a counter 1k+g is always nice.

One change I would make to the OP:

I think 3p+k should be in the top ten. It is one of the best sabaki moves in the game, grants 50 pts of guaranteed damage for reading an elbow (or mid punch) correctly and with VF5 Goh's mean BT game, can turn one bad elbow into a game ender for your opponent (e.g. sabaki 3p+k, p,k, BT, p+k, 270 forward throw - in my experience, this flow is successful quite often).

i haven't actually played vf5 hardcore yet, i do agree with ice-9 with a majority of that list simply based on what i've seen in vids.

btw: maybe it's just the vids i've been watching, but it seems goh's reach has improved on his jabs (most notably his 3p and 6p). is this true?

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif knee sabaki pushes your opponent away on guard now. Makes it safer to use against characters such as Jeffrey.

BEST move in VF'5' that you FORGET to mention /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif. Use it even when you are at -11 and the opponent throws you, no CLASH! Even Akira doesn't a move like this.

The best part of /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif is the quick back-turned throw he has... negligible damage, but damn if it doesn't throw your opponent off! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

9k+g is a cool move but it's incredibly limited and only really useful if you are a yomi god. It hits high and has a huge start up so pretty much any high or mid attack will knock you out of it and any low attack with crouch under it. The only time it is ever useful is in a reverse nitaku and you correctly guess a throw. If you guess incorrectly though, MC and likely a knock down too. Pretty painful.

If it were a jumping mid, then it would definitely be in the top 10.

  15. danny13

    danny13 Well-Known Member

    I disagree.

Imho, it is specially designed for Goh in 5.

Goh -9 and Jeffrey do knee.

    Goh does:
    low punch - MC
    Basara - MC
    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - MC
    high punch - MC
    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif- MC

    Jeffrey throws:
    low - 11pts of damage & +4
    Basara - clash
    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif - clash
    high punch - clash
/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif- 30pts of damage + an almost guaranteed /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif making it a total of 62 points which is 3 points less than basara.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/uf.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif would be worthless in Evo or FT but in 5, No1 move imo.

No 1 move? I don't think so dude. It's an alright move but it's too situational.

  17. danny13

    danny13 Well-Known Member

So what other move can do that in 'that' situation?

  18. Makatiel

    Makatiel Well-Known Member

Actually, 1p+k is better in that situation. ETEG is also probably better. Or maybe even just TEG.

9k+g is a high risk high reward move with a slow start up. If you want to be a high risk player that's great. But it's not a safe move (if your opponent ducks, you're eating a back throw) and it hardly ever hits.

Again, nice move but far too situational and dependent on really good yomi. Goh in general is dependent on good yomi with all his sabakis and stuff, but most of his sabakis dont leave him totally open. Personally, I find it much easier to yomi strikes than throws, but that may be different for you.
