Getting Stronger and Playing Better Video

    A while ago I posted the thread: http://virtuafighter.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/topics/268617#Post268617

    In the thread above, I posted a video link to some basic VF techniques that I felt players should focus on developing and improving on. I've decided in this thread to show how to combine the above techniques against different players in Asia.

    Please take 30 seconds to read my notes before you watch the video below. I noticed that many of the match videos posted by members here show fancy offensive patterns and tricks. While a tight offense makes exciting videos, it often doesn't translate into a win or a win streak.

    It's easy for a player to fall into the habit of over developing their offense. When some players lose they think of new tricks they can add-in or they think of how they can string together different attacks to beat their opponent. IMO it's not a strong offense or tricks, but a balanced game that will lead to long-term wins against your opponent. My advice is not to be afraid to give up the offensive advantage.

    The matches below were played in March, 2010 between AdamYUKI (Jeffry) versus my Lau. As these are casual matches they are full of things like botched commands and outright mistakes. Adam is a long-time sparring partner of mine and the video gives you a glimpse of actual gameplay. The matches aren't particularly special and are generally the first or last match played in our sessions. The last match in the video was thrown in to show some Lau shenanigans. I played Adam offline in 2008 and I felt he was very strong at that time. Kudos goes to Adam for becoming an even stronger VF'er in the span of a year studying in Japan. I'm sure he gives any opponent a hard time.

    I hope that readers will watch how we react to pk, p and 2p landing and getting guarded. This is so important in VF. Also pay attention to how we react to quick mids getting guarded and how we use fuzzy guard on a constant basis. Watch how Adam has no fear of completing strings like KKP and how he is a master of delayed attacks like 43p, p because of his strong confidence in his defense. Watch how we stand there like a rock and do nothing, but patiently watch the opponent attacking.

    I apologize for the lengthy post and I know I'll draw some criticism for my notes. I hope some of you will find something in this post that you would like to work on strengthening.

    This Video does'nt explain nothing. Some people can't tell what they are looking at by the naked eye. They are Good matches nonetheless but i think your just showing off how good you held your own against Adam.

    Can't argue with that logic.

    Thanks, Azusabo, for these matches.

    In particular, the scenes of 9:35-9:38 were the most interesting to me. The patience with which you two were defending is terrific. The tiny little back-dash into an attack by Adam eventually crowned the close winner of that match. Really nice.

    The real issue here is "Why does Adam keep playing VF5 online when he could be enjoying VF5R in the arcades of Japan?"

    He probably does play in the arcades.. it doesn't hurt to play both.

    Easy, it cost a lot of money to play in the Arcades. Sometimes it's better to avoid something when you know it can be too addictive especially if it can harm you in the process. If I was in Japan I would avoid the game too. Knowing my competitive nature I would keep playing until I figure out the moves and frames and before I know it I would of been spending a fortune

    How much is one fight? Kamaage said on the shoutbox the other day that he's played 30,000 odd matches in R.

    Must be hard to hold down a job/study and play at the same time.

    Do you get to keep your credit if you go on a streak or do you need to pay for every single match?

    You don't have to pay if you win, so if you get a 20 win streak you don't pay 20 times, you pay when you lose. That's why it's great to be someone like Homestay in the arcades. [IMG]

    That's not so bad. I'd be paying out my arse but for people who win it must be a great setup.

    One credit is 100Y in most places (that's around 1$). If you are REALLY lucky, you may find a place that charges 50Y per credit, but I imagine those places would have inferior competition and out-of-the-way location as well...

    The one I was frequenting had an added bonus of cigarette smoke wall so thick I had to carve my way in with an ice pick, and an alien goblin kid who was like 12, had around 7 characters and played like a machine. After a while I've learned to pack my $#^ when he came in, the only times I'd win against him was when I was playing so bad it was putting his perfect defense's timing off [IMG]

    Hmmm... maybe they are playing at home because it's healthier? [IMG]

    Good matches!

    It makes me sad to read replies like that. It takes a giant effort to try and make a post humble enough and helpful enough to be useful.

    SDS_Overfiend you're correct. There's a link to the original Lau thread I made a few months ago with a detailed breakdown of some of what I focus on while playing. This includes my command inputs etc. Probably the only complaint there was the inability to tell the strength of my opponents since they were all Asian players and I had only threw in quick snips of the basic techniques. Had I inserted Foolishkato, J Rapper Sho, TSJeffry or a few guys who might be equally as strong, it wouldn't have helped you have a slight feel over how to use the threads notes since you've never played a match with these guys. I can later post these as I planned to for comparison purposes if there's interest.

    What I asked people to do is take 30 seconds out to read my notes because "people can't tell what they are looking at". This is exactly the problem preventing people from getting better. *sigh* Your signature says offense sells tickets, but defense wins games and the purpose of this thread is to combine my earlier thread with this one to reflect that idea.

    If you count it based on money, Homestay has easily spent over $10,000 USD in the arcades. If you look at other guys like Mukki it's more than double that. Mukki's spending might be double that just based on the three versions of VF4. It took lots of losses to become a beast like that.

    Leonard, I'm glad you got something out of the notes and video! I think you might be the only one. [IMG] That's an interesting section that you picked out. 2p backdash attack is pretty strong is one of the things that will quickly teach a person to develop a patient pace.

    @LA

    Boy you were right, lol.

    @Dennis

    It takes me a while to get enough free time to capture and put the matches online. I'll get around to it, promise [IMG]

    @Rodney

    What...Rodney didn't reply? Must be busy eating Starbucks Madeleines or drinking a Jamba Juice. Oh wait, that's 2006. [IMG]

    Just for the record, Andy (Azusabo) has nothing to prove against adam. They have been sparring partners in new york since 96-97 as far as I know, maybe even longer and are both strong players.

    The point I was making is quite a few people on here(not all) completely miss the point of videos and help like this and that is exactly the reason I dont waste my time posting them.
