When should I use the different /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif string he has?
I know that it's only from /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif that he can go into /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif and that /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is very quick and so forth. But seeing as they're all High and most of them end in the same way if you tack on a /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif I fail to see the benefit of using the different strings.

The only one I can see a difference with is /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif where the second hit is mid.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif would be alot nicer if the two hits came out a bit faster after each other. It's safe on guard but people rarely block it seeing as they can just hit me out of it before the second hit connects.

Maybe it's just me having problems with this and I'm applying his /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif strings wrong. Are they only to be used in combos maybe?

Thanks for any info. Wish we had more shun info here.

Well, remember any of those times that you can be interrupted by a fast attack, you can also have a reversal used against you. So, mix-ups for the sake of just not predictably using the same string each time have inherent value.

Unfortunately, I don't know Shun well enough to give specific advice about each string.

In my opinion I wouldn't worry or rely too much on his punch strings. Granted there are situations for them but I wouldn't focus on them heavily thinking it will change your overall game. Only knowing the complete ins and outs for every move Shun has will get you closer to mastering him. Once you've mastered /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/db.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif(/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif) you can call yourself a master. JK - this move kind of sucks, but fun to do once in awhile.

Out of all of Shun's punch strings /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is the best. Not only will the kick leave the opponent to the side upon hitting, it is also cancelable into stance.

/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif(/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif) is great for ring-outs. It's also great because all moves are cancelable into stance (except kick).

The only time I will religiously do /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif is after blocking moves where only this string will hit, i.e. Lau's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/ub.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif or Lion's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif. I wouldn't even say religiously because mixing in a throw is good also, although not guaranteed.

I agree Shun is definitely lacking in this forum for information. Let's change that!

As far as punch strings im finding new stuff all the time. Im sure most of you experienced Shun users knew this already, but I discovered it for the first time last night. Not a use it all the time string, but its heavy when it goes down. Start with the backturned sou /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif then from sou there is the /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif combo with the back-cancel /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif, Shun takes a drink with the cancel and goes into facing opponent Sou. If you input /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif fast enough, you'll pull his rainbow kick and skip the drink animation, opponent thinks they have an opening and BAM, rainbow to the head. Anyway, sorry if its something you all knew already. I didn't and it was a fun discovery.

This is one of those setups that is probably going to work better on an opponent who is very familiar with Shun. Other players may not know he is supposed to drink after that combo so canceling it into the kick might not fool them. It's hard to fool/set someone up when they don't even know you're trying to fool them or set them up.

Agreed, but if its an aggressive foe it works well too, keeps the string alive, I've used it successfully (albeit not that much) as a pure offensive string as well with the punch and the rainbow both landing.

On topic of Shun's BK SOU cancel into /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif:

This move is really only good when an opponent is lying down, getting up, or quick rolling. A good way to set this up is after any float. Once launched do a few moves (combos) and right before they are about to land start the BK SOU with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif. Also holding guard should be used almost always so Shun stays lying down.

Pertaining to his multiple options with SOU or BK SOU:

I too didn't realize the complexity at first, mainly speaking his canceling of the kick. One example could be this...

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif(hold),/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif...

As you can see it can go on and on forever. And the nice thing is you can enter all commands as fast as you want. It's pretty fun to try even if you get punished. It's so confusing to the oponent since there are so many different scenarios.

By the way holding /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif from SOU is an awesome move. The best way to go into it is playing mind games with /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif. Mind games meaning cancel it sometimes into the kick and sometimes not.

Something else confusing is just doing the first /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif from SOU. This is the one move Shun has that won't take him out of SOU stance.

Well since we are on the subject of cancelling...
My fav is this set up with shun.
    From BK SOU, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif
This set up only works if P hits from BK SOU. Buffer in your backdash to create space, then taking a drink to enter BK SOU again, and more importantly to increase your space. Besides adding a drink you are also baiting your opponent. So many people that I have played with shun panic and think they have a chance for a free hit. Unfortunately for them it's usually too late. They attack with a high or mid, they eat my sabaki counter and take big damage. If they try to be a little more cautions and strike with a low, then I can change up my /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif from BK SOU for /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif. The other option of this string is stopping at /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif from BK SOU. again only on hit. If they do a high or mid SOU /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif will sabaki, and if they do a low, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif will crush. If they do nothing I can push and hold /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif to keep advantage. Of corse this mix up only works on people who are already conditioned to his BK SOU /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif,/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif string. Which brings up a good point. Cancelling only works if they know what you can do!! I think its best that you stick to very simple strings, with close to no cancels to read your opponent. Then once you feel they have an understanding and a respect of your moves then you can cancel. Too many people try to jump into cancels early.

On a side note. I have a question regarding shuns /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif string. How do you punish his /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif? It’s -16 on block but it pushes back so far I can never punish with anyone. It's never been a problem for me until I started playing live. I usually shut down this string before the /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif with a quick jab. But lag prevents that and the nooby shuns that I've played abuse it till the cows come home.
