    Hey all
ive been playing virtua fighter for a while now,and im still confused about the counters , im wondering if someone can shed some light on this for me.

I use goh all the time, hes my fave,im pretty damn good with him, but i dont understand the counters.

Say for example, i can counter a high punch by hitting triangle and circle at the right time, but it just pushes the opponents arm away, and then u can grab him in a different fashion.
Sometimes i manage to counter and uppercut him in one move and never understand how i do it.

Can someone please explain how its done?
Also counters for low kicks and sweeps - how the hell do you do that?

    Thanks in advance.

Hmm... it sounds like what you are doing is you are attempting to do the Kumiteharai counter(/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif), and then attempting to do a specific throw (/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif)... So hopefully this will clear a few things up.

Kumiteharai is one part of a two-part move. While it can act as it's own technique, it is commonly used to go into Tsukami (by pressing /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif after the initial /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif). The first move, if timed properly, sabakis (or counters) an opponent's strike, which you can tell is done properly if it makes a strange "swiping" sound. Kumiteharai will sabaki high punches, high elbows, mid punches, and mid elbows. The earlier you execute the move in relation to your opponent's attack, the more advantage you get. However, in most cases, you really can't reliably get a standard throw after a successful Kumiteharai.

If you are seeing that you are doing the uppercut move, it leads me to believe you are attempting the /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif throw, or even a variant of /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif after the Kumiteharai, since his two uppercut moves are /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif.

As far as kick and sweep counters, the only counter he has is /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif, but that only counters mid kicks.

    Hope this helps!

At VFDC we call 'counters' 'reversals' instead.

The uppercut you saw was probably Goh's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif. You do it when you guess your opponent will do a elbow(/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif) or a mid punch (akira's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif) and Goh will eat the attack follow by a uppercut. After the uppercut, a follow up /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif~/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif is guaranteed. This move is also refered as a 'sabaki' rather than a 'reversal'. Its a attacking move that will eat attacks.

Goh can't reverse low kicks or sweeps. The only character that can do that is Aoi.

    Really thats strange
I seem to remember being able to stop sweeps with goh in vf4 evo,in fact im sure of it. I was never able to follow it up,but i could still stop it from happening(for example when opp. gets up and sweep kicks, goh reaches down and stops the kick but doesnt follow it up) it would surprise me if they took out moves from the game.
There must be something im missing here.
I am looking at his moves list now...i dont see anything about low counters, maybe im crazy but im sure i remember being able to stop a sweep kick without the b,f kick move.

Wrath - i know , for example , u get into tsukami when u do the down grab with down (i.e r2+down+grab) then its a whole slew of different moves, i got those down pat. its the counters themselves im trying to work , thanks for your input though, it is highly appreciated.

btw, how do you guys get those P and K blue and yellow icons in here anyways?

When you are in reply mode, you can click on the smiley in the post toolbar (where you can turn on bold, italic, etc)... it will open a menu of different available smileys, including the buttons and arrows. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Cool thanks for the info wrathx!

So i managed to get the counter once last night...lol. I still dunno how i did it,im utterly confused. And i cant seem to block akiras elbow, quite annoying i got frustrated and gave up haha.

got to 10th dan , from 10th to master is strange indeed, took me one fight...

of course i noticed if youre master and u fight a 10th dan u can lose ur rank if you lose. Luckily i won , but was close.

So am i right in beleiving you only go up un rank when ur master when u fight 10th dan or higher? (i cant see the whole bar because i have a shitty sdtv , but i noticed when i beat a 10th dan it went up quite a bit)

I think for that one you have to win agaisnt ten 10th dans without losing to one. Every time you lose to a 10th dan he takes your master tittle and you take his 10th dan tittle.

you have to fight five 10th ranked dans in a row without a loss.

I noticed a strange counter as well. Somehow I reversed a strike by pressing P,K + G at the right time last night?

Are you sure you didnt get /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif by accident?

    I think I did the /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif, /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif move by accident as I was trying to do Basara.

Not exactly sure how that happened, but I'll go with it. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif
