    These rules should be mentioned separately for each tourney, but at least here we allow multiple buttons bound to a single button-type of shortcuts.

    Remember though that word 'macro' has a bit dualistic meaning. In PC world it means a programmable sequence of actions on one button that would be certainly banned in any tournament worth its salt.

    Yeah, typically default controls are allowed in tournaments. Typically. Of course, it is up to the tournament runner and you vote on that by putting up your entrance fee.

    Also, like Manjimaru said, Macro also encompasses things like one button does Akira's /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/df.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/b.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/f.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif. But it is also used to notate stuff like /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif or /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif.

    The macro ban is universal on full move macros (like the Akira one above) but is lenient on the two/three button presses at once. It also depends on where you're playing, some tend to think that pushing the two buttons correctly is a required dexterity skill.

    If you use the 360 pad you should get your macros.

    Default controls are almost always allowed.

    I do, and if I'm not allowed to have P+G, K+G, P+K, and P+K+G assigned to different buttons, than it's OK, but I'm definitely gonna play worse... I am just used to using any Playstation Pad, whether it's DualShock, DualShock2, or Sixaxis.

    I use pad, but my configuration is set to:

    X = /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif
    Y = /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif
    A = /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif
    B = /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif

    That way P+K = X+Y, K+G= Y+B, and P+G = X+A. For all three P+K+G I just press all four buttons since my thumb fits over all of them.

    I just haven't gotten use to stick yet.

    I haven't yet done this with Virtua Fighter 5 (since it's a three-button fighter), but with the Soul Calibur series I use a trick that a friend taught me; I guess it's just called "the claw" (as that's what we refer to it as).

    I've done this with a DualShock and DualShock 2 controller (along with a Dreamcast controller), and it works very well. You use the D-Pad like normal. But you kinda set the controller in your lap and place the following fingers on each button:

    Middle Finger: Y (triangle)
    Ring Finger: B (circle)
    Thumb: A (x/cross)
    Index Finger: X (square)

    For the first time or so that it is used, it kinda cramps your fingers. But once you use it a few times, it feels very nature. The reason I used this technique was that most Soul Calibur tournaments didn't allow any buttons except the four face buttons. So I had to learn not to use the trigger buttons. This helped a lot, and definitely speeds up your reaction time (as it's more similar to playing with an arcade setup). Another reason for doing this was that I was just too damn cheap to buy an arcade stick (most people at the Soul Calibur tournaments I went to had arcade sticks). :p

    I have pretty big fingers, and I don't have a problem doing this at all. If you attempt this and think you have problems getting it down right, just ask and I'll post up an image of what I'm talking about. Again, this has worked very well in Soul Calibur for me (and Tekken when I played it briefly). I haven't tried it on a three-button fighter yet (Dead or Alive, Virtua Fighter), but I will probably wind up doing so to fade away from the triggers (don't like using them, as when you play in tournaments or at someone else's house, you have to waist time setting up your binds). A very good technique that really improved my Soul Calibur play. Again, I will most likely start doing this with three-button fighters to help my game out in those also. Until I buy an arcade stick, of course.

    The Claw. . .

    I know this dude named Jinmaster from the DOA community who did that at tournaments.

    Not only did it make him look like a jackass but he still sucked at the game so. . .I say nay to the claw.

    I don't see a problem with it for casuals or Xbox Live, but in tournaments it is a little more questionable. I know some SRKers make a big stink over this but I only care about it a little.

    Jinmaster plays DOA? Maybe I'm thinking of a different Jinmaster...

    And the Claw is used by pretty much...well, every Tekken player that uses a pad. =/

    As for whether or not macros should be allowed: it's my opinion that pad players can do whatever the hell they want. I'd even give them full move macros. Those poor bastards. =(

    Seriously though, even on a pad with macros, a stick player is still at a large advantage.

    Yeah, input speed and precision is way more important than being able to press three buttons at once.

    I am using the 360 pad and it's analog stick.

    I have a few input errors that I know I wouldn't have if I used a stick.

    And those errors can cost me upwards of 40 damage.

    I use the /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif macros on my pad because they are awkward to press mid game with the face buttons.

    /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif and /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/p.gif + /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif are easy to hit though.

    I play with "the claw". Anyways, before i did... now i have the arcade stick so its all good. My dad played like that and i thought it was ridiculous, but i tried it once and found it to be very effective. Command input is faster when you use "the claw".

    Say no to button mapping. Mainly because it's a pain in the ass to play casuals if every time it comes around to the pad player they have to remap all their shit.

    I'm looking at you, DancingFighterG. :p

    This is the main reason I don't see pad binds (as they aren't really macros) used in low-level tournament play. It's simply a pain in the ass to deal with. People want to stop and adjust the settings every time.

    Do I'd personally have to agree with banning binds at tournaments. Default controls (which pretty much covers everything), or use an arcade stick. Or "the claw." Muhaha.

    If you use a pad, it isn't possible to hit certain button combinations without macros... How could you hit /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/k.gif+/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/g.gif together reliably, at all, without having it as a "macro" or whatever you want to call it? It would put you at a GIANT disadvantage, which I think you already are, against a joystick because they can input moves a little faster and a little more accurately.

    You can play on a pad the same way you play on a stick.

    Thumb - G
    Index - P
    Middle - K

    Or whatever suits the size of your hands. Hitting K+G isn't difficult.

    I've never seen a tournament that allowed macros, and I'd have a hard time taking it seriously if I ever encountered one. As a tournament director myself, I ban macro buttons at any tournament I hold, regardless of the game in question or the player's controller/stick of choice.

    I strongly feel it's a tournament director's responsibility, even in what is apparently the "console era" of tournament play, to uphold arcade conditions to the best of their ability. This includes abolishing macro buttons in any serious match. If that makes controllers useless in competition, so be it. We should be looking to adopt a standard anyway.
